The NAFPP is pleased to offer a small selection of resources that you might find useful. These are other organisations that we think may be able to assist in a variety of situations. Equally, you can also get in touch with us if you think we can offer additional advice or support.
Regulators
NAFPP members are authorised providers of prepaid funeral plans. Because of this, they are subject to regulation. Please find below details of the relevant regulatory bodies.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
The FCA is the UK’s regulator for financial services, and this includes prepaid funeral plans. You can visit the FCA website for more details on how regulation works and the standards they set for firms. You can also use the FCA’s ‘firm checker’ to make sure that any firm is legitimate, and is authorised to offer the service they are trying to provide to you.
The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS)
Firms which are regulated by the FCA are under the jurisdiction of FOS. This is a free service which investigates consumer complaints. There is a procedure to follow should you need to complain, including giving the firm a chance to put things right. Information about this process, and lots of other useful advice, can be found on the FOS’ website.
The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)
If a firm regulated by the FCA fails, the FSCS will step in to find a solution for customers, and if necessary, compensate them for losses. The FSCS website contains information about how this service works, should you ever need it.
Other Trade Associations
Association of British Insurers (ABI)
ABI has over 300 members who sell a wide variety of insurance types. This includes life insurance policies like Over 50s cover, which are often marketed as paying for funerals. You can contact ABI via their website if you need help with one of these policies.
National Association of British Funeral Directors (NAFD)
NAFD members carry out approximately 80% of the UK’s funerals. Many of NAFPP’s funeral director members are also members of this association. The NAFD Funeral Directory can be used to search for one of their members. You then know this company has been independently inspected and meets industry standards of facilities and care.
The National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF)
SAIF has over 1000 independent funeral businesses in membership. The SAIF website enables you to find a local, independent member of the organisation (which will have met their inspection standards) as well as offering advice. Some of the NAFPP’s independent funeral director members are also members of SAIF.
Bereavement advice
NAFPP understands that the death of someone close to you can be a very difficult time. These organisations offer help and support.
Cruse Bereavement Support
Cruse has a helpline, lots of useful resources, and local support services all over England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. More details about all the services and support it offers can be found by visiting the Cruse website.
Cruse Scotland
The Scottish branch of Cruse has equivalent resources for residents of Scotland. Details of the support available can be found by visiting the Cruse Scotland website.
The Good Grief Trust
The Good Grief Trust connects bereaved people with bereavement support services. A full list of the services they signpost to can be found online.
The Coroners’ Courts Support Service (CCSS)
CCSS is an independent association which exists to help anyone who needs to be involved in a Coroner’s Inquest. Visit the CCSS website to understand more about the services they provide.
Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS)
SOBS offers peer-led support to adults impacted by suicide loss. This includes by phone, in person, and in online forums. Details of the support available can be found on their website.
Child Bereavement UK (CBUK)
A charity supporting children grieving the loss of a loved one. CBUK has many useful resources to help support children when they are bereaved. More information can be found by visiting the CBUK website.
The Samaritans
The Samaritans is always there to listen. If you need immediate support, you can call them on 116 123, free, 24 hours a day. There are also other ways to contact The Samaritans such as live chat.
